Other tools either lock your files in the cloud or hand you an unpredictable API bill. Ream meters the AI for you and caps it — so the price on the box is the price you pay. The app and your files are always free to keep.
Heavy month? Refill your ink any time. Cancel whenever — the editor keeps working and your files stay yours; you just pause the AI.
Ink is how Ream meters AI use — roughly the words the model reads and writes for you. A rewrite or a chat reply uses a few hundred to a couple thousand ink. Starter’s monthly grant covers steady daily writing; Pro is sized for drafting a full novel with room to spare. You’ll always see how much ink you have left in-app.
No. That’s the whole point. The AI is included and runs through Ream’s hosted proxy — there’s nothing to sign up for, wire in, or top up with a credit card you forgot about. The model key never ships in the app.
On your disk, as plain Markdown, in a folder you pick. Editing, search, and version history are fully local — Obsidian can open the same folder. Only the text you send to the AI ever leaves your machine. Optional sync (Pro) backs the folder up across devices, encrypted.
You keep the app and every file you wrote — they were never locked up. You just lose the bundled AI ink and sync. Re-subscribe any time and pick up where you left off.
New accounts start with a grant of ink, so you can try the AI on your own manuscript before you subscribe. Download the app and you’re writing in minutes.
